NEW YORK: Lawyers representing the Beatles – Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the estates of George Harrison and John Lennon are seeking £53 million ($30 million) in past royalties from EMI group.
The band's lawyers filed a suit against the recording company in New York and its subsidiary Capital Records in London. The suit was on behalf of Apple Records, a company set up to manage the creative and business affairs of the band. Apple is now owned by Richard Starkey (better known as Ringo Starr), Paul McCartney, Olivia Harrison (widow of George Harrison) and Yoko Ono (widow of John Lennon).
Apple said the recording label EMI had been shortchanging the company in royalties for recordings sold across the world. EMI owns the copyright to the Beatles recordings.
Apple took the legal step after audits at several recording labels. When contacted, EMI spokesperson maintained that the recording label had a cordial relationship with the band's company. It routinely allows artistes to audit royalty accounts as they did in the case of Beatles/Apple. But bands and recording labels do not always agree on every clause in a contract, she said, which seems to be the case with Apple, she said.
EMI was the first to record the band in 1962 with songs such as 'Ask Me Why', 'Love Me Do', 'Besame Mucho', etc., for the Paarlophone label. As EMI raked in it fortune so did the band which went on to become all time hits and legends in rock & roll.
Apple and EMI have already battled in court before. The last litigation lasted almost a decade when EMI decided on an out-of-court settlement.
DEUTSCH: Beatles verklagen Plattenfirma EMI
Dies sei leider gescheitert, sagte Apple Corp-Chef Neil Aspinall.
